(May 9, 2017) – Five Union Springs High School students have been identified by panels of creative professionals as the most talented young artists in the nation, earning national recognition in the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards of 2017.
 
Seth Gilmore earned a Gold Medal for his photo, “=” in the Photography category, and Abigail Salico earned a Gold Medal for her piece, “Kobe” in the Drawing and Illustration category.

Silver Medalists include Bailey Burr for “Touch of Grey” in Drawing and Illustration, Alexandria Tucker for “Chilly” in Drawing and Illustration, and Kayli Wright for “Restricted” in Photography.   

This year, a record-breaking 330,000 works of art and writing were submitted for adjudication in the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards’ 29 categories, which include poetry, photography, sculpture, humor, editorial cartoons, video game design, and more. Less than 1% of these works of art and writing were recognized at the national level.
 
Gold Medalists, Seth and Abigail, as well as each of their art teachers, Lindsay Spaziani and Jason Charles, have been invited to attend a ceremony at the world-famous Carnegie Hall in New York City on Thursday, June 8. The ceremony will feature celebrity guests and the top creative leaders in the arts.

Scholastic Art & Writing Awards of 2017

In addition to the Scholastic Art Competition, one Union Springs High School student submitted artwork in the 2017 Congressional Art Competition. Panels of district artists select the winning entries, and a painting titled “Kelly” by Emily Irving was chosen as the winner of New York’s 24th Congressional District. Emily will be recognized at the annual awards ceremony in Washington, D.C., and her piece will be displayed in an exhibit at the U.S. Capitol for one year.  

A gallery of these award-winning pieces, as well as artwork from all students in Grades K-12 will be on display May 16 through 19 in the Union Springs High School Library. Award-winning artwork is also on the district website, www.unionspringscsd.org, under Quick Links – Award-Winning Artwork.
