The Union Springs Athletic Department will be holding its annual Athletic Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 19, 2018 at Union Springs High School where two individuals and one team will be inducted into the Class of 2018 Hall of Fame. This year’s inductees include Cayuga County Sheriff David Gould, Nick Delaney, and the 1956 Varsity Boys Track and Field team.
Sheriff David Gould will be inducted into the Hall of Fame in the “Honorary” category. Sheriff Gould was an outstanding athlete for Union Springs in the early 1960’s, earning numerous letter awards in football, basketball, tennis, and track. He was also named captain of the football team, as well as president of the Varsity Club. Notwithstanding these great accomplishments, Sheriff Gould went on to make his greatest mark on our community. After graduating from Auburn Community College and serving in the United States Army, Sheriff Gould pursued a career in law enforcement. He held many positions within Cayuga County and New York State which culminated with the position of Cayuga County Sheriff in 2007; a position he still holds. Sheriff Gould has been active in many local organizations, including serving as the Cayuga County United Way Chairman in 2011.
Nick Delaney was an exceptional basketball player for Union Springs in the late 1990’s. He finished his career as the second leading scorer in school history with 1257 career points. He was named a First Team All-League recipient in his sophomore, junior, and senior seasons, in addition to being named the Co-MVP of the team all of those years. Mr. Delaney was part of many very successful teams during his athletic years with numerous long sectional runs and one IAC Championship. During his junior year, the Varsity Boys Basketball team recorded a school record of 22 wins. Mr. Delaney went on to play basketball at RIT where he graduated with high honors.
The 1956 Varsity Boys Track and Field team had a very special season that concluded with a county championship. At the championship meet, the team won all but three of the events in which they competed. At that time, members of the team held two sectional records and six county records. Members of the team included Michael D’Agostino, Richard Middleton, William Delaney, John Rindfleish, George Minturn, Alex Davis, Bruce Davis, Donald Kenoyer, David Palmer, John Ludwick, David Stryker, Ronald Jones, Martin Jones, Duane Babbitt, Robert Smith, Michael Fitzgerald, Robert Shelton, and Doug Pinckney.
