Union Springs High School students earn 27 accolades in 2019 CNY Scholastic Art Awards
(March 1, 2019) - Union Springs High School students earned a remarkable 27 accolades in this year’s CNY Scholastic Art & Writing Awards competition. The awards earned included eight Gold Keys, eight Silver Keys, and 11 Honorable Mentions.
For the first time since Union Springs has been submitting entries, one of Mrs. Spaziani-Gaal’s students submitted a short video into the Film & Animation category, and the video earned an Honorable Mention. Also for the first time, one of Mr. Charles’ students submitted a photograph that was originally taken for a drawing piece, and the photo earned a Gold Key.
This year, over 100 area schools across the 13-county Central New York region submitted 5,673 pieces of artwork. Roughly 50 judges comprised of professional artists, educators, and photographers awarded 1,589 works in 17 categories.
Central New York award recipients were announced at an awards ceremony at Onondaga Community College in January. All Gold Key pieces will move on to the national competition, and winners will be announced sometime in March. The Everson Museum of Art will display a selection of works from March 9 through April 7.
A gallery of Union Springs’ students’ award-winning artwork from the 2019 Scholastic Art competition will be on display May 21-23 in the High School Library. It is also on the Award-Winning Artwork page under Quick Links on the district’s homepage.
