Another Union Springs’ student wins Edgewood Gallery Award

Drawing titled "Opening Up" by Alyson Walters

(May 8, 2019) – For the second year, students from Union Springs High School entered artwork into the Central New York Art Guild’s Student Art Competition. Any school within a 30-mile radius of Syracuse may submit up to three original pieces of 2-dimensional and one 3-dimensional piece of artwork from graduating seniors. The judges only select a few winners, and Union Springs’ senior, Alyson Walters, won the Edgewood Gallery Award for her drawing titled, “Opening Up,” which also earned a Silver Key in the 2019 CNY Scholastic Art & Writing Awards competition. The Edgewood Gallery Award comes with a $50 cash prize and a $50 gift certificate to Edgewood Gallery to go towards framing the winning piece. This is the second consecutive year that a Union Springs student won the Edgewood Gallery Award; last year, Joan Hodges won the award.

Alyson also submitted one of her drawings into the 2019 Congressional Art Competition for New York’s 24th Congressional District, and it was one of the runners up. The piece was titled “Fifteen,” which earned a Silver Key in the 2018 CNY Scholastic Art & Writing Awards competition. The drawing will be on display in Congressman Katko’s office for the next year.

Union Springs High School students earned 27 awards in the 2019 CNY Scholastic Art & Writing Awards competition earlier this year with eight Gold Keys, eight Silver Keys, and 11 Honorable Mentions. Each year, the Everson Museum of Art selects around 30 pieces from all of the central New York Silver Key winners to display in its gallery for a month. This year, Union Springs’ junior, Madelyn Walters’ drawing titled, “Drops on the Divide” was chosen for the display. Her piece was on display at the Everson Museum of Art from March 9 through April 7.

A gallery of Union Springs’ students’ award-winning artwork from the 2019 Scholastic Art competition will be on display May 21-23 in the High School Library. It is also on the district’s website,, as Award-Winning Artwork under Quick Links.
