Dear Union Springs CSD families:
This afternoon we learned that one of our teachers at AJ Smith, is subject to a mandatory quarantine as a result of contact tracing, due to their interactions outside of school with an individual who has tested positive for COVID-19.  The Cayuga County Department of Health will be supporting this teacher in the coming days, and unless this individual tests positive themselves, the Cayuga County Health Department protocol states that additional contract tracing at school is not necessary at this time.
The Cayuga County Health Department determines if contact tracing, and/or quarantining is warranted.  Our district’s obligation to our school community is to support contact tracing by providing information if requested by the health department.
I share this information in an effort to be transparent regarding COVID-19 and its impact on our schools. We will continue to clean and disinfect our buildings, and encourage all of our students to continue to wear face coverings when social distancing cannot be maintained.
If you have any questions regarding our COVID-19 procedures, please check our website under the Reopening Plans and Updates & COVID Protocol Information header. Thank you for your continued support as we work to keep our school open and our students safe.

Sincerely,
                                                  Jarett Powers

Subject: COVID-19 Positive Test Results

Dear Union Springs Central School District Community:

The Union Springs Central School District received notification on November 21, 2020 of a positive COVID-19 test result for three students in remote learning and for one student at the high school. As a result, the individuals who tested positive have been placed in mandatory isolation by the Cayuga County Health Department (CCHD).  The remote students are not, and have not been, in regular attendance to school. The high school student’s last date of attendance was November 16, 2020.

Additionally, we received word this morning that one of our middle school students has been placed in quarantine
due to their interactions outside of school with an individual who has tested positive for COVID-19.  The Cayuga County Department of Health will be supporting this student in the coming days, and unless this individual tests positive themselves, the Cayuga County Health Department protocol states that additional contract tracing at school is not necessary at this time.

The CCHD will work with the school to investigate the situation and determine who may have had contact with the confirmed positive cases. The school district is assisting the health department in the contact tracing process by providing the names, addresses, and phone numbers of any person who may have had contact. Based on this information, it will be determined as to which individuals need to be placed in to mandatory quarantine. The Cayuga County Health Department will communicate with those individuals directly. Union Springs Central School District will continue to communicate with state and local health departments.

Symptoms of COVID-19 include one or more of the following below:
  • fever or chills
  • scratchy or sore throat
  • headache
  • new loss of taste or smell
  • muscle or body aches
  • cough
  • shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
  • nausea or vomiting
  • diarrhea
If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, stay home from work or school and contact your healthcare provider.  Please be safe during the Thanksgiving Holiday break.

Sincerely,
Jarett Powers
Superintendent

FOOD SERVICES UPDATE

Meals for all Union Springs CSD students will be free throughout the 20-21 school year after the U.S. Department of Agriculture announced that schools can continue their free summer meals program. That means children attending Union Springs CSD will continue to have access to nutritious food as the country recovers from the COVID-19 pandemic. The move was made possible by Federal funds.

In addition to free breakfast and lunch for students in attendance at AJ Smith Elementary, Union Springs Middle School, and Union Springs High School, breakfast and lunch meals will be available to any remote learning student in the Union Springs Central School District who wants it.  This includes our students in grades 6-12 who attend school in person every other day.

To schedule meals, please contact Kathy Smith, the district Food Services Director at 315-889-4120

MS/HS A/B DAY MONTHLY CALENDAR

We need substitute teachers. If you are interested in becoming one to support students, please contact Valerie Castiglia at vcastiglia@unionspringscsd.org or 315-889-4100. Thank you!

At this time, any new elementary entrants to our district will be assigned to remote learning until space opens for additional in-person classroom instruction. The secondary grades have very few in-person spaces available, and new entrants may be assigned to remote learning as well. We have tried our best to meet everyone's requests for both in-person and remote learning, but we simply do not have the flexibility to keep up with an influx of new students who are now requesting in-person instruction.

October 1, 2020: The New York State Department of Health has released its updated Pre-K-12 COVID-19 Toolkit. To access this resource, please click here!
