Teamwork Propels Girls Basketball to Tournament Win

In the offseason, Union Springs Girls Varsity Basketball Coach Andy Kalet knew he had a special team. The kind of team that could end an 18-year tournament drought.
And that’s just what they did by winning the Cayuga County Holiday Tournament, defeating Southern Cayuga 50-24 in the championship game.
“I’m just so happy for the girls because they worked so hard in the offseason and now during the season,” said Kalet. “All that hard work in the offseason has prepared them for these moments.”
Kailey Kalet was named tournament MVP, while her teammate Payton Gilbert was named to the all-tournament team. Kalet said it’s exciting to bring the championship back to Union Springs and noted that the key to success was the teamwork all nine players showcase.
“We have all played together so long and we have a natural bond that we use on and off the court,” Kalet said. “Just work hard and stay together.”

Gilbert said the team is looking forward to finishing the year strong, but also has high hopes for next season as well. With Anna Salls as the team's only senior, the program is set to return eight varsity players next year.
“This year has been great, and next year should be just as exciting,” said Gilbert. “This group of girls is just so special. We are all so close and we all play our roles so well.”
