All Four Basketball Teams Take Home Holiday Championships

For the first time in nearly 20 years, Union Springs CSD won all four of the championship games at the Cayuga County Holiday Basketball Tournament.

Held at Cayuga County College, the holiday tournament has been held for nearly 50 years. It features teams from Union Springs, Southern Cayuga, Port Byron, and Weedsport. However, this year was a clean sweep for Union Springs, as the boys’ and girls’ varsity teams, as well as the boy’s and girls’ junior varsity teams, won their respective tournament championships.

I couldn't be more proud of the performance and effort of all four teams. It is the first time we have swept the tournament winning all four championships in almost 20 years,” said Union Springs Athletic Director Todd Salls. “I think all four teams played their best games of the year at the college this week.”

Union Springs Principal Jason Dentel said that while he’s proud of all four victories, he’s even more proud of the comradery each team displayed for one another.

“Our teams were there to cheer each other on and I think the success of each team motivated the others,” said Dentel. “A clean sweep is a result of the program building our coaches do and the hard work and dedication of our players. Well done wolves!”

It was the first victory at the tournament for the boys’ varsity program since 2010. The girls’ varsity team won their second consecutive holiday tournament. The boys’ JV program’s win was their first in the tournament since 2016, while the girls’ JV team won their first championship since 2007.

Kailey Kalet was named tournament MVP for the girls’ division, while teammate Danielle Waldron was named to the all-tournament team. Damon Brown was named tournament MVP for the boys’ division, while teammate Collin Park was named to the all-tournament team.
