USHS ELL Students Build Bonds with A.J. Through Shared Activities
Union Springs High School English Language Learners (ELL), led by their dedicated teacher Chelsea Ryan, have embarked on a heartwarming initiative to connect with kindergartners at A.J. Smith Elementary School. These visits, which have already taken place in October and November, are planned to continue in December, enriching the educational and social experiences of both groups.
An Idea Born from Opportunity
The inspiration for these visits came from a scheduling shift. In previous years, high school ELL students collaborated with the high school Spanish class on activities. When this year’s schedules didn’t align, Chelsea Ryan reached out to the kindergarten teachers at A.J. Smith Elementary to explore new opportunities.
“I also have four ELL students in kindergarten, and one of my older students has younger siblings there. It seemed like a natural way to foster conversation and build community while learning language and culture for both groups of students,” Chelsea Ryan explained.
Overcoming Nervous Beginnings
Eight middle and high school ELL students have participated so far, but the journey wasn’t without initial nerves.
“They were so nervous! Speaking a second language is intimidating, especially with people you don’t know,” Ryan shared. However, the warm and patient reception from the kindergartners helped ease the tension.
The younger students, particularly those in the ELL program, were especially thrilled to have older peers to connect with, creating a positive and encouraging environment.
Learning Beyond the Classroom
These visits provide a unique opportunity for growth, not just academically but socially and culturally. Kindergarteners and their older peers engage in shared learning, exploring new words, concepts, and cultural exchanges.
“For many older ELL students, this is a chance to play the role of a big brother or sister, something they may not get to experience here if they don’t have younger siblings in the country,” Ryan said.
The activities also tie directly to classroom learning. Highlights include:
- Reading: Older students read self-selected books about fall, pumpkins, and apples to the kindergarteners, applying vocabulary they had been learning.
- Crafting Turkeys: In November, students created turkeys using shapes, prepositions, and colors, reinforcing key classroom concepts.
These hands-on activities provide real-world applications for vocabulary and content being taught.
A Celebration of Diversity
Union Springs' ELL program reflects the school’s vibrant diversity. While many ELL students speak Spanish, others speak Filipino and Marshallese, enriching the cultural exchange during these visits.
“People often assume that all English Language Learners are Spanish speakers, but our students bring a variety of languages and cultures to our school,” Ryan emphasized.
Looking Ahead
The next visit in December promises to bring even more opportunities for learning and connection. With additional older students expressing interest in participating, the partnership between Union Springs High School and A.J. Smith Elementary is strengthening, fostering a culture of inclusivity and mutual support.
