Union Springs Athletic Department Honors Winter Athletes
The Union Springs Athletic Department held its Varsity and JV Winter Sports Awards ceremony last night, recognizing the dedication, achievements, and perseverance of its student-athletes throughout the winter season.
Athletic Coordinator Todd Salls opened the evening with a welcome address, highlighting the many accomplishments of Union Springs teams and athletes this season, including:
- ESPN Athlete of the Week Honors – Jenna Jump, Aaron Johnson, and Jennifer Daum were each recognized for their outstanding performances.
- Scholar-Athlete Recognition – Every varsity team achieved scholar-athlete status, demonstrating excellence both in competition and the classroom.
- Cayuga County Holiday Basketball Tournament Champions – All four basketball teams won their respective championship games.
- Boys Bowling IAC Regular Season Champions – The team claimed the regular season title in a strong showing.
- Successful Sectional Competition – Every team competed in sectional play, demonstrating resilience and skill.
- NYS Bowling Championship Qualifiers – Jenna Jump and Caroline Smead earned spots in the state championships next weekend.
Following these highlights, each team’s coach reflected on the season and presented awards to their athletes.
Coach Jim Hodges spoke about the JV Girls Basketball team, emphasizing the enthusiasm and energy they brought to every game.
Coach Andy Kalet recognized the Varsity Girls Basketball team for their perseverance and competitive spirit, highlighting their recent sectional semi-final game against Delaware Academy. He presented awards to his players, including a special G.O.A.T. Chain to senior Chloe Wilde.
Coaches Janet Murphy and Adam Presutti reflected on the progress of the Varsity Indoor Track athletes, noting their continued improvement and the number of new personal records set throughout the season.
Coach Marianne Viscardi presented awards to Boys and Girls Bowling, acknowledging their many accomplishments this season.
Coach Greg Tones took time to recognize each member of the JV Boys Basketball team, sharing individual stories that highlighted their contributions and growth over the season.
Coach Dan Cerro concluded the evening by presenting awards to the Varsity Boys Basketball team. He spoke about the program’s continued progress and expressed his excitement for next season, confidently stating that next year would be the year Union Springs overtakes Moravia.
The evening was a celebration of not only athletic achievements but also the dedication, perseverance, and teamwork displayed by Union Springs student-athletes. Congratulations to all of this year’s winter sports teams, coaches, and supporters on an outstanding season.
