Union Springs Middle School Students Excel in Cayuga County Conservation Field Days Essay Contest

Union Springs Middle School proudly announces the outstanding achievement of three of its 6th grade students in the 2023 Conservation Field Days Essay Contest, hosted by the Cayuga County Soil & Water Conservation District. The students demonstrated exceptional skill and passion for environmental conservation, securing first place and honorable mentions in the regional competition.

The 2023 Conservation Field Days were held back in late September, at Emerson Park on Owasco Lake, in Auburn, NY. Conservation Field Days is an outdoor educational program that allows sixth grade students the opportunity to become better acquainted with natural resources and the environment.  The program gives students a chance to learn about efforts that are being made by many groups and individuals to conserve our natural resources.  That day, professionals from various fields gave short programs, enabling the students to learn not only about the subject matter discussed, but also see nature and conservation related occupations in action.

The Cayuga County Soil & Water Conservation District annually conducts the Conservation Field Days Essay Contest to encourage local students to explore environmental issues and showcase their understanding of conservation practices.

The following Union Springs Middle School students earned accolades in the 2023 contest:

  • First Place: Greta Staehr - “NY Maple Association” essay
  • Honorable Mention: Elliot Fleury - “Fish Biology Station” essay
  • Honorable Mention: Jocelyn Miner - “Invasive and Native Plants” essay

Ms. Nora Haldeman, the Principal at Union Springs Middle School, expressed immense pride in the students' accomplishments, emphasizing the resolve and commitment they exhibited in their essays. "These students have shown exceptional understanding and dedication to environmental conservation. Their insightful essays reflect their passion for protecting our environment and enthusiasm to making a positive impact on the world around them!"

The winning student writers were awarded bluebird houses and/or certificates for tree seedlings. The winning essays will also be posted on the Cayuga County Soil & Water Conservation District website.
