Union Springs Alumna Rachel Culver Returns to Inspire the Next Generation

The Union Springs Central School District proudly welcomed home alumna Rachel Culver (Class of 2019) for a special evening at A.J. Smith Elementary, where she shared her journey from student to successful multimedia journalist.
The event, sponsored by the Union Springs Elementary PTO, brought together students, families, and staff for an engaging and heartfelt night. Members of the A.J. Smith Journalism Club greeted attendees at the door and kicked things off with a warm and thoughtful welcome to Rachel that set the tone for the evening.
Now a Multimedia Journalist with CNY Central, Rachel has built an exciting career covering stories across Central New York. She is also the voice behind The Orange Zone, a Murrow Award-winning podcast where she shares her passion for sports and storytelling. During her visit, Rachel offered a behind-the-scenes look at her career, sharing both the highlights and the realities of life in the field.
Among her memorable experiences, Rachel spoke about interviewing broadcasting legend Mike Tirico as a guest on her podcast—an opportunity that showcased just how far her hard work and dedication have taken her. She also shared the less glamorous side of journalism, recalling moments of reporting in harsh Syracuse winters, including one assignment where the cold was so intense that her pants froze solid.
Throughout the evening, Rachel reconnected with her roots by interviewing former coaches, including girls basketball coach Andy Kalet, as well as former teachers and current students. These conversations highlighted the strong relationships and support system that helped shape her path.
When she’s not reporting or producing, Rachel enjoys spending time reading, caring for her growing collection of plants, and cheering on her favorite sports teams.
Rachel’s visit served as an inspiring reminder to students of what is possible with passion, perseverance, and a willingness to embrace new opportunities. The Union Springs Central School District extends its sincere thanks to Rachel for returning home to share her story and for inspiring the next generation of Wolves.
