Union Springs High School Students Experience the Trip of a Lifetime in Spain

Over Spring Break, 45 students from Union Springs High School set off on an unforgettable journey to Madrid, where they immersed themselves in the Spanish language and culture through a once-in-a-lifetime travel experience.
During their five days in Spain’s vibrant capital, students explored historic landmarks, encountered world-renowned art, sampled authentic cuisine, and strengthened their Spanish skills through real-world interactions. The trip extended beyond Madrid, with visits to the stunning and historic cities of Toledo, San Lorenzo de El Escorial, and Segovia—each offering its own unique glimpse into Spain’s rich history and traditions.
The experience was years in the making. Spanish 1 & Literacy Intervention Teacher Ms. Tonya Acome shared that she and Ms. Matson began planning the trip two years ago, hoping to generate enough interest to bring the opportunity to life. Their efforts paid off, as an overwhelming number of students signed up to participate.
Despite the large group, travel logistics went smoothly from start to finish. With seven dedicated chaperones—including Ms. Acome, Mr. Bessette, Mr. Dentel, Mr. Gonio, Mrs. Horbal, Mrs. Murphy, and Ms. Ryan—students were supported every step of the way. Once in Spain, the group was guided by a professional tour director who ensured a seamless and enriching experience.
Students quickly found favorite moments throughout the trip. Exploring Toledo’s narrow cobblestone streets stood out as a highlight for many, along with attending a traditional flamenco dance performance and sampling classic Spanish treats like churros. One of the most memorable experiences came during their final dinner in Madrid, when students joined in singing and dancing alongside local Tuna musicians—creating a joyful and lasting memory.
For Ms. Acome, the most rewarding part of the trip was seeing students bring their classroom learning to life. Watching them confidently practice Spanish, embrace new cultural experiences, and step outside their comfort zones was a proud moment and a exemplification to their growth.
“A lot of hard work went into planning and organizing the trip, and it was absolutely worth it,” Ms. Acome shared. “The students had a great time and learned so much. It is my hope to offer more trips to Spanish-speaking locations in the future because these immersive experiences make classroom instruction come alive.”
From historic streets to cultural celebrations, the trip provided students with meaningful connections, unforgettable memories, and a deeper appreciation for the Spanish language and culture—an experience they are sure to carry with them for years to come.
