Lucas Walawender Named ESPN Ithaca Fueling Excellence Athlete of the Week
Union Springs senior goalkeeper Lucas Walawender has been named ESPN Ithaca’s Fueling Excellence Athlete of the Week, recognizing his outstanding performance in goal for the combined Union Springs/Port Byron boys soccer team.
Walawender played a key role in helping the Wolves capture the Cufari Kickoff Classic, anchoring the defense with two shutouts during the tournament. His steady play between the posts helped the Wolves secure the tournament championship, and his performance earned him Tournament MVP honors.
As a senior goalkeeper, Walawender has continued to provide an important presence for the Wolves. Through the early portion of the 2026 season, he has recorded multiple shutouts while making several key saves to keep his team in games.
The recognition from ESPN Ithaca adds to Walawender’s accomplishments and shines a spotlight on the hard work he and his teammates have put into the season.
ESPN Ithaca’s Fueling Excellence program recognizes high school student-athletes from throughout the region for exceptional performances and contributions to their teams.
