Union Springs High School junior Matt Smead is getting a firsthand look at what it takes to build a career in the HVAC industry through a job-shadow experience at Mason and Grant Air Handling Inc. in Auburn.

Matt began his job shadow on September 9 and has spent the past several weeks learning alongside professionals in the field. With the busy HVAC season beginning to ramp up, much of Matt’s experience so far has involved accompanying technicians on service calls and seeing firsthand how they diagnose and solve problems in the field.

Through the experience, Matt has been introduced to a wide range of HVAC skills and concepts, including the proper use of basic tools, compressor replacement, troubleshooting pressure leaks in heating systems, duct installation, voltage and electrical principles, heat pumps, mini-split installation and more.

“The staff has been great in letting Matt see the inner workings of the HVAC industry and showing him skills applicable to the HVAC industry,” said Matt Gonio, Union Springs Work-Based Learning Coordinator. “Matt is learning valuable skills as well as gaining insight into what a career in HVAC will look like. He has also gained insight into pathways into a career in HVAC.”

As temperatures continue to drop, the demand for HVAC services will increase, providing Matt with additional opportunities to expand his experience. The goal is for him to observe a wider range of projects this fall, including more installations and other types of service work.

Matt’s experience at Mason and Grant is providing more than just an introduction to the HVAC industry—it is giving him the opportunity to develop practical skills, explore potential career pathways and connect classroom learning to the world of work.
