Union Springs Students Explore Heavy Equipment Careers at Local 158 Training Site

Union Springs students recently had the opportunity to explore careers in the heavy equipment and skilled trades industries during a hands-on visit to the International Union of Operating Engineers (IUOE) Local 158, District 545 Training Site in Constantia, NY.
On Wednesday, October 14, Union Springs Work-Based Learning Coordinator and teacher Matthew Gonio accompanied a dozen students to the training site, where they learned about apprenticeship programs, career pathways, and the benefits of joining Local 158. Students explored opportunities in heavy equipment operation, mechanics, and stationary engineering, gaining valuable insight into potential careers after high school.
The visit also provided students with a unique hands-on experience. Under the supervision and guidance of Local 158 staff, students had the opportunity to operate an excavator, wheel loader, and telehandler, learning the basics of each machine and gaining valuable time behind the controls.
This experience will help students make informed decisions about their futures by introducing them to career opportunities, including relevant BOCES programs and apprenticeship pathways.
"The kids were excited and asked great questions," said Gonio. "The staff at 158 was engaging, professional, and answered all the questions and provided insight into the 158 training center pathways and apprenticeships."
Union Springs Central School District thanks the staff at IUOE Local 158 for welcoming its students and providing an engaging, real-world learning experience. Opportunities like this help students connect classroom learning with potential careers and discover new possibilities for their futures!
